BREAKING: Reps ask FG to name sponsors of terrorism, banditry

The house of representatives has asked the federal government to reveal the financiers of terrorism and banditry in Nigeria.

The lower legislative chamber passed the resolution during Wednesday’s plenary after adopting a report of its security debate which took place last week.

Communities across the country have come under renewed gunmen attacks, with rising cases of abductions of schoolchildren.

“That financiers of terrorism, banditry and kidnapping be publicly named, sanctioned and prosecuted,” the report reads.

“That terrorism-related prosecutions be open, expeditious and transparent.”

The lawmakers asked the federal government to establish a special court for terrorism, banditry and kidnapping.

The legislators said the penalties for arms trafficking and illegal possession of weapons should be strengthened and strictly enforced.

The parliamentarians said a truth, justice and reconciliation commission should be established to address extremist, communal and religiously motivated violence.

The lawmakers said the more than 40 security recommendations will be forwarded to the senate for concurrence, and then transmitted to President Bola Tinubu, security agencies, state governments and other relevant institutions for implementation.
