Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets of Bissau, the capital of Guinea-Bissau, on Friday to denounce the military coup that occurred last month and call for the immediate release of detained opposition figures.
The protesters clashed with security forces during the march, setting tires ablaze while voicing strong demands for the freedom of Domingos Simões Pereira, leader of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), who was arrested in the wake of the November 26 coup, according to family members and security sources.
The demonstration comes amid heightened regional concerns, as West African leaders prepare for a summit to address the ongoing political crisis in the coup-prone nation.
Guinea-Bissau has endured a long history of political instability, with this latest military intervention marking another chapter in a series of coups and attempted takeovers since independence.
