The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has announced plans to install Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the Okanlomo of Yorubaland during a ceremony scheduled for December 21, 2025, in Oyo town.
The event is anticipated to attract traditional rulers, politicians, business leaders, and dignitaries from across the South-West region.
This development follows closely after the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, recently installed Ibadan-based businessman Chief Jubril Dotun Sanusi as Okanlomo Oodua in Ile-Ife, reigniting longstanding debates over the authority to bestow pan-Yoruba titles.
Earlier this year, a similar honour by the Ooni for Sanusi had prompted a sharp response from the Alaafin, who issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding retraction, arguing that only the Alaafin holds the prerogative to confer titles extending across Yorubaland.
The ultimatum lapsed without resolution, fuelling discussions on traditional hierarchies and boundaries. While some view these installations as symbolic recognitions of contributions to Yoruba development, unity, and philanthropy, others highlight potential for confusion within the institution.
Seyi Tinubu, a lawyer and entrepreneur, is recognised for his youth engagement initiatives, social programmes, and political outreach in the South-West, often accompanying the President on official outings.
The Alaafin's decision adds him to a lineage of prominent figures honoured for their roles in advancing Yorubaland's cultural and developmental interests.
No official response has emerged from the Ooni's palace or Chief Dotun Sanusi regarding the upcoming installation.
As preparations advance in Oyo town, the ceremony is likely to intensify conversations on tradition, authority, and contemporary influence among Yoruba royal institutions.
