ADC: EFCC Plotting To Cripple Malami's Guber Ambition

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has alleged that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is deliberately targeting former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), to undermine his ambition to contest the 2027 Kebbi State governorship election.

In a statement issued on December 13, 2025, by the party's National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC described the recent revocation of Malami's administrative bail as politically driven rather than rooted in genuine law enforcement efforts.

The party claimed Malami fully cooperated with investigators and did not violate any bail conditions.

The ADC highlighted the suspicious timing of the bail revocation, noting it followed Malami's attendance at a political rally in Kebbi State.

"What he probably did not know was that attending a political gathering in his home state could suddenly become a reason for revoking his bail," the statement read.

It further alleged that restrictions imposed by the EFCC—specifically barring Malami from Kebbi State, were designed to hinder his political activities in his home state, creating the impression that the agency's goal is to "cripple his political ambition" rather than pursue justice.

Malami, who defected to the ADC earlier in 2025 and formally declared his 2027 governorship intention in November, has been under EFCC scrutiny since late November over allegations related to the recovery of Abacha loot during his tenure (2015–2023).

He was initially invited for questioning, briefly detained, and later re-detained after failing to perfect updated bail conditions. Malami has denied any wrongdoing, including unsubstantiated claims of terrorism financing or links to multiple bank accounts.

The ADC demanded Malami's immediate release on bail without politically restrictive conditions, emphasizing his presumption of innocence until proven guilty in court.

The party warned against the "weaponisation" of anti-graft agencies against opposition figures while expressing support for genuine anti-corruption efforts.

The EFCC has not publicly responded to the ADC's accusations as of December 13, 2025. Malami remains in custody pending fulfillment of bail requirements amid ongoing investigations.
