Actor Jeremy O. Harris released after 3-week detention in Japan over ‘drug smuggling’

Jeremy O. Harris, the American playwright and actor, has been released from custody in Japan following a three-week detention related to allegations of attempting to smuggle illegal drugs into the country.

Harris, 36, was arrested on November 16 at Naha Airport in Okinawa upon arrival from Taiwan.

Japanese customs officials alleged that during a routine inspection, approximately 780 milligrams of Ecstasy (MDMA) were discovered in his carry-on tote bag.

However, according to The New York Times, the Tomishiro police station in Tomigusuku City confirmed his release on Monday but declined to comment on whether formal charges had been filed.

The case had previously been forwarded to prosecutors in Naha for alleged violations of Japan’s stringent customs act.

However, Harris’ representative said he was released without charges and would remain in Japan to continue writing and researching for an upcoming project.

Had he been convicted, Harris could have faced up to seven years in prison under Japan’s strict anti-drug laws.

Harris rose to prominence with his 2018 production ‘Slave Play’, which earned a nomination for the Tony Award for Best Play.

He is also known for his work in film and television, having produced and co-written the A24 film ‘Zola’ (2021), which earned him a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Screenplay.
