Retired Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, former Chief of Army Staff, has sharply criticized an alleged verbal confrontation between Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike and a uniformed military officer in Abuja, labeling it a direct assault on national security and the military’s institutional integrity.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Buratai described the November 11 incident as an undermining of the Commander-in-Chief’s authority with potential to erode troop morale. He warned that any public disparagement of a serving officer by a political appointee risks fracturing the chain of command and setting a dangerous precedent for civil-military relations.
“A minister’s verbal assault on a military officer is an act of profound indiscipline that strikes at the core of our nation’s command and control structure. It undermines constituted authority and threatens national order,” Buratai stated.
He emphasized that the Armed Forces operate on strict hierarchy, respect for the uniform, and formal communication channels values he said must never be compromised.
Dismissing any notion that the episode was mere political drama, Buratai insisted the uniform symbolizes state authority and the sacrifices of Nigeria’s service members.
The retired general demanded an immediate, unequivocal public apology from Wike to President Bola Tinubu as Commander-in-Chief, to the Armed Forces, and to the officer involved.
“Our nation’s security must always come first. The integrity of our Armed Forces demands nothing less,” he concluded.
As of press time, neither the FCT Administration nor the Minister’s office had issued any official response to the allegations.
