Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has welcomed a Federal High Court ruling that halted the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s planned 2025 National Convention, calling it a decisive blow against impunity within the party.
On Friday, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja barred the PDP from proceeding with the convention until it complies with its own constitution, the Electoral Act, and statutory guidelines.
The judge also prohibited the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognizing any convention outcome conducted without due process.
Speaking shortly after the verdict to PDP stakeholders from 12 states and the FCT, Wike described the day as both his “happiest and saddest” — joyful for the triumph of justice, yet sorrowful over the party’s deepening crisis.
“We are happy that we have fought impunity, but on the other hand, we are not happy with what is happening in the party,” Wike said. “It has never been this bad in the PDP.”
The gathering included prominent figures such as former governors Samuel Ortom (Benue) and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), serving and former federal lawmakers, Rivers State lawmakers led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, and several state PDP chairmen.
Wike criticized party leaders for arrogance and disregard for sacrifices made by longstanding stakeholders, warning that such conduct invites inevitable backlash.
“Opposition parties must unite and follow due process. If you don’t, you’re sending the wrong message,” he stated.
He urged members to remain steadfast in defending truth and the rule of law, adding: “No one will intimidate us.
We will do what is right.”In a direct message to PDP governors, Wike said: “What I expect now is for governors to use state resources to improve citizens’ lives — not to destroy our party.”
