U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) on Thursday blasted the Biden administration for removing Nigeria from the State Department’s Countries of Particular Concern (CPC) list, declaring on X that the country has become “one of the deadliest in the world for Christians.”
“Meanwhile, President Biden removed Nigeria from the Country of Particular Concern list,” Mace wrote, contrasting the move with President Donald Trump’s tougher stance.
“President Trump is working to reverse those decisions. 45/47 remains one of the most consequential presidents in American history,” she added.
Mace’s criticism follows Trump’s October remarks on Truth Social, where he labeled Christianity in Nigeria under “existential threat” from radical Islamist groups, claimed “thousands of Christians are being killed,” and said he had placed Nigeria on the CPC list during his first term.
Trump also directed the Pentagon to prepare “options for possible military measures” against Nigerian terrorist groups, prompting sharp rebuke from Abuja and caution from Beijing and Moscow.
President Bola Tinubu rejected the claims, asserting that Nigeria upholds religious freedom and protects all faiths. China and Russia called on the U.S. to respect Nigerian sovereignty.
Nigeria was first designated a CPC in December 2020 under Trump for “systematic and ongoing” religious freedom violations. The Biden administration delisted the country in November 2021.
