Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, has handed over a fully equipped speedboat to the Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to strengthen the protection of the Third Mainland Bridge and other critical federal bridges in the state.
The donation, presented at the NSCDC Marine Base in Lagos, is aimed at boosting marine patrols and curbing vandalism, illegal dredging, and encroachment beneath Lagos bridges.
Speaking during the ceremony, Umahi described the gesture as part of his personal commitment to supporting security agencies in safeguarding national infrastructure.
“This is in line with my magnanimity and unwavering support for the NSCDC in carrying out its statutory mandate,” he said.
Lagos State NSCDC Commandant, Keshinro Adedotun, commended the minister for the timely intervention, saying the speedboat would significantly enhance monitoring along Lagos waterways and serve as a morale booster for officers combating criminals operating under the bridges.
He also appreciated the immediate past Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Engr. O.I. Kesha, for her role in facilitating logistical support for the Corps. In line with a directive from the NSCDC Commandant General, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, the Lagos Commandant officially commissioned the new speedboat and formally inaugurated the Marine and Infrastructure Protection Unit.
Assistant Commandant of Corps Oloyede Emmanuel Ige was appointed as the pioneer Commander of the unit. The newly appointed Commander, ACC Ige, pledged to justify the confidence reposed in him by intensifying 24-hour surveillance and patrols to preserve the structural integrity of the bridges.
Commandant Keshinro used the occasion to warn illegal dredgers and vandals operating in Lagos waterways to desist immediately or face arrest and prosecution.
“Licensed operators must comply with the law, while unrepentant offenders will face the full wrath of the law,” he declared.
The event aligns with broader collaboration between the NSCDC, the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the Federal Ministry of Works, and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to secure critical national assets across the country.
