The United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has sounded a dire warning to British citizens, branding 20 Nigerian states as high-risk amid a sharp spike in kidnappings, violent crime, terrorism, and communal clashes.
In its latest advisory published on GOV.UK and accessed by SaharaReporters on Sunday, the FCDO urged nationals to exercise “extreme caution,” tighten personal security, and prepare emergency exit plans.
No-Go Zones (All Travel Advised Against):
Borno
Yobe
Adamawa
Gombe
Katsina
Zamfara
The FCDO cited rampant Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa (ISWA) activity, especially near transport hubs, religious venues, and crowded gatherings. Humanitarian workers were flagged as prime targets.
Avoid All But Essential Travel:
Bauchi
Kaduna
Kano
Kebbi
Jigawa
Sokoto
Niger
Kogi
Plateau
Taraba
Abuja outer suburbs
Violent crime is surging in these areas, while military operations in the North-East (Adamawa, Borno, Yobe) risk triggering retaliatory strikes, rendering cities like Maiduguri highly dangerous.

Delta
Bayelsa
Rivers
Akwa Ibom
Cross River
Militants continue to target oil infrastructure, with kidnappings rampant.The South-East remains tense due to clashes between secessionist groups and security forces, posing risks to foreigners.
Even in the South-West, including Lagos, armed robbery, car-jacking, and nighttime abductions are on the rise.
Though large-scale terrorist attacks are rare, ISWA claimed strikes in the region as recently as 2022.
