Soldiers of the 28 Task Force Brigade, Operation Hadin Kai, early Saturday repelled a massive dawn attack by over 300 ISWAP/Boko Haram fighters on Chibok town in Borno State, inflicting heavy casualties with no losses on the military side.
The terrorists launched a coordinated multi-pronged assault at about 3:00 a.m., attempting to overrun defensive positions, but were met with fierce resistance and superior firepower from alert troops.
After a two-hour intense gun battle, the attackers broke contact and fled toward the Timbuktu Triangle axis.Ground forces immediately called in air support.
Nigerian Air Force combat jets and an armed drone swiftly responded, delivering four devastating manned airstrikes followed by precision drone strikes along the terrorists’ escape routes.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama the strikes obliterated scores of fleeing fighters, destroyed their regrouping points, and completely disrupted their withdrawal.
“The coordination was perfect. The terrorists suffered substantial losses and have been denied any chance to reorganise,” a senior military source said.
The successful defence of Chibok comes over eleven years after the 2014 abduction of more than 200 schoolgirls from the same community, underscoring the continued threat from ISWAP in southern Borno despite sustained military pressure.
No civilian casualties were reported in Saturday’s fighting. Operations in the area continue.
