Nigerian troops under Operation Garkuwan Arewa have killed six armed bandits and recovered seven AK-47 rifles during a targeted operation in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State, security sources confirmed on Sunday.
The successful raid, carried out in the villages of Gangara, Tsageru, and Sungawa, was launched after credible intelligence revealed intensified bandit activity in the area, according to defence correspondent Zagazola Makama.
The neutralised bandits were identified as Musa, Shehu, Nasiru, Yusuf, Mantagora, and Siddiq.
In apparent retaliation for the heavy losses, surviving members of the gang have resorted to widespread arson, setting fire to farmlands and residential properties across nearby communities in an attempt to terrorise locals and reassert dominance.
“These are desperate acts by a crumbling criminal network,” a security source told Zagazola Makama.
“They are burning everything in sight to intimidate the population after suffering major setbacks.”
Local vigilante groups are now working alongside the military to track down fleeing bandits, some of whom are believed to be hiding inside Gangara town.
Sporadic exchanges of gunfire have been reported as the hunt continues.Military authorities have warned that failure to completely dislodge the remnants could lead to increased civilian casualties and further destruction of livelihoods in the affected rural areas.
In response, troops have stepped up ground patrols across Gangara, Tsageru, and Sungawa while deepening collaboration with community-based intelligence networks to detect and preempt further attacks.Operations to locate and neutralise the remaining suspects remain active.
