Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has issued a stern reprimand to a Fire Service Officer over delays in emergency response, raising concerns about preparedness during the harmattan season and end-of-year activities.
In the video shared online, the minister questioned the
efficiency and readiness of the service to respond swiftly to emergencies,
stressing that Nigerians expect immediate action when lives and property are at
risk.
Did they inform you an emergency would happen before it
happens? Are you not supposed to be ready before it happens?” Tunji-Ojo asked,
expressing frustration over the delayed return of a fire service appliance.
He described such excuses as unacceptable, noting that
citizens facing fires cannot be told that equipment had only recently returned
from another assignment.
“To the average Nigerian whose house or business is on fire,
you cannot give an excuse that an appliance just returned in the last 24
hours,” he said.
Tunji-Ojo reminded uniformed personnel of their
responsibility to remain fully prepared at all times, emphasizing the need to
refill and reposition equipment immediately after every deployment.
“You are supposed to refill immediately after your first
call because you don’t know when the next call will come. We are talking about
lives,” he stated.
The minister directed coordinators and officers across the
country to ensure round-the-clock operational readiness, insisting that public
safety must remain a top priority, especially during periods of heightened fire
risk.
