Tipper Brake Failure Claims Three Lives, Injures Several in Lagos

A catastrophic chain-reaction crash at Powerline Junction inward Aleje claimed at least three lives and left several others gravely injured on Saturday morning, authorities confirmed, marking the second deadly brake-failure incident on Lagos roads in just 48 hours.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) broke the news via a terse tweet, revealing that a tipper truck suffering total brake failure plowed into three tricycles locally known as Marwa, a Toyota Corolla, and a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) bus in a devastating collision that turned the busy junction into a scene of twisted metal and tragedy.

“We recorded a fatal accident at Powerline junction inward Aleje in Ikorodu; it involved a Tipper that had a brake failure, 3 tricycles (Marwa), A Corolla car and a MPV bus. 3 lives were lost and several people sustained injuries,” LASTMA stated.

Emergency crews from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), Nigerian Police, and LASTMA remain on-site, administering first aid, extracting trapped victims, and managing the chaotic aftermath.

Traffic has ground to a halt beyond Sabo Roundabout, with authorities implementing counterflow measures to ease congestion. Motorists approaching from Ikorodu Garage face severe delays.

The incident echoes a similarly gruesome crash just two days earlier at Ekoro Junction in Abule-Egba, where a tricycle operator was crushed to death and two others seriously injured after a fully loaded six-tyre trailer (AGL 514 XD) lost its brakes, rammed an unregistered tricycle, collided with a Honda Pilot (FST 992 DV), and vaulted the median to smash into a Toyota Camry (EKY 753 JA) and nearby property.

LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq described Wednesday’s carnage as “harrowing and deeply lamentable,” noting that officers rescued two trapped victims and cordoned off the area to prevent secondary accidents.

Road safety experts have long warned of the lethal risks posed by poorly maintained heavy vehicles on Lagos’s overburdened highways.

With brake failure emerging as a recurring culprit in both crashes, calls are mounting for stricter enforcement of vehicle worthiness checks, especially for commercial trucks and trailers.

As recovery operations continue at Powerline Junction, bereaved families and traumatized survivors are left grappling with loss reminders that on Lagos roads, one mechanical fault can shatter multiple lives in seconds.
