Tinubu Reappoints Buba Marwa as NDLEA Chairman for Another Five Years

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reappointed Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) as Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for a second five-year term, a State House statement announced on Friday.

The renewal, effective immediately, extends Marwa’s leadership of the anti-narcotics agency until 2031.

Marwa, who was first appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in January 2021, had previously served as Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse between 2018 and 2020.

Born in Adamawa State, the retired military officer is a former Military Governor of Lagos (1996–1999) and Borno (1990–1992) States.

A graduate of the Nigerian Military School and Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1973.

His military postings included Brigade Major of the 23 Armoured Brigade, Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant-General Theophilus Danjuma, Academic Registrar of the NDA, Deputy Defence Adviser at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, DC, and Defence Adviser to the Nigerian Permanent Mission to the United Nations.

Marwa holds a Master of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh (1983–1985) and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University (1985–1986).

Since taking office in 2021, Marwa has overseen the arrest of over 73,000 drug traffickers and barons and the seizure of more than 15 million kilograms of hard drugs.

The NDLEA has also intensified nationwide anti-drug abuse campaigns and rehabilitation programs.

President Tinubu commended Marwa’s performance, stating: “Your reappointment is a vote of confidence in your onerous efforts to rid our country of the menace of drug trafficking and drug abuse.

"I urge you not to relent in tracking the merchants of hard drugs, out to destroy our people, especially the young ones.”
