Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, has revealed that President Bola Tinubu has issued a clear directive to the military and security agencies to completely rebuild Nigeria’s national security architecture in order to decisively tackle banditry, terrorism and organised crime.
Speaking on Saturday at the North-West Regional Security Summit in Kaduna, Badaru said the president is determined to restore lasting peace and stability across the country.
“The president’s directive is unambiguous: establish a strong, yet adaptive national security architecture that will eradicate these threats once and for all,” the minister told participants.
He highlighted tangible progress from sustained joint military operations in Kaduna, Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto and Kebbi states, noting that several previously abandoned highways have been reopened and are now witnessing increased civilian and commercial traffic.
Key routes now safer include Kaduna–Kachia, Kaduna–Birnin Gwari, Jibia–Gurbin Baure, and sections of the Sokoto–Illela corridor.
Badaru added that local markets in Kaura Namoda, Shinkafi, Batsari, Giwa and Kajuru local government areas have recorded a surge in economic activity, while thousands of displaced villagers have started returning to their communities.
Despite the gains, the minister acknowledged that “lingering threats” from bandits and criminal networks persist in the North-West, stressing the need for sustained, coordinated action.
A public administration scholar, Professor Muhammad Isa of Ahmadu Bello University, warned that tactical successes will remain temporary unless structural drivers of insecurity, including poor coordination, overstretched institutions and inconsistent policies are comprehensively addressed.
The summit’s organising committee chairman, Babangida Hussaini, disclosed that a larger National Security Summit will hold in Abuja on December 1, 2025, to harvest ideas and recommendations from Nigerians on the way forward for the country’s security.
The Kaduna summit brought together governors, traditional rulers, security chiefs, academics and civil society representatives from the North-West zone.
