President Bola Tinubu has directed the education ministry to resolve the ongoing Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike immediately.
The directive followed a meeting with Tunji Alausa, the
minister of education, who reassured the public that the government has largely
met ASUU’s demands.
Alausa said the president’s has reiterated the imperative to
keep students in school.
“The president has mandated us that he doesn’t want ASUU to
go on strike, and we’re doing everything humanly possible to ensure that our
students stay in school,” the education minister said.
He described the recent six-day strike as unnecessary,
noting that talks have resumed with the union leadership following the
concessions.
The minister announced a major shift in negotiation
strategy.
Previously, separate government committees handled talks
with ASUU for universities, ASUP for polytechnics, and COHESU for colleges of
education.
This approach has been consolidated under a single
negotiating body, the Yayale Ahmed federal government negotiating committee for
tertiary institutions.
“What we’ve done now is to expand one single committee,”
Alausa said.
The minister said this unified committee now handles
dialogue with both academic and non-academic unions across all federal tertiary
institutions.
He dismissed reports of a four-week ultimatum, insisting
that the government is actively listening and committed to resolving the
issues.
ASUU has been at odds with the federal government over
salary and promotion arrears, which have historically fuelled strike actions.
