Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo has reacted after being left out of the final shortlist for the CAF Women’s Player of the Year Award, insisting that true recognition comes from performances on the field.
Okoronkwo, who was widely tipped by fans and analysts to make the top three, took to Instagram to express gratitude and subtle disappointment following the announcement.
In her post, she wrote, “I remain grateful for the support across Africa. CAF’s decision is noted, but my focus stays on the pitch, Recognition is earned not awarded. Awards don’t always reflect reality, but the pitch never lies”
CAF on Thursday released its three-person shortlist for the prestigious award, with Super Falcons star Rasheedat Ajibade making the cut.
However, the list raised eyebrows among fans after notable omissions such as Esther Okoronkwo and Zambian striker Barbara Banda, both of whom had standout performances over the last year.
Instead, the shortlist featured only players from the WAFCON final, including: Rasheedat Ajibade (PSG/Nigeria), Ghizlane Chebbak (Al Hilal, Morocco) and Sanaa Mssoudy (AS FAR, Morocco).
