An armed robbery suspect, Aliyu Salihu from Wushishi Quarters, Minna, has died following a botched escape from police custody at the Maitumbi Division, the Niger State Police Command has confirmed.
The incident occurred on Saturday, November 23, at approximately 9:20 a.m.According to police sources, Salihu asked to use the restroom, then suddenly attacked the desk officer and a station guard before leaping over the station fence.
One of the officers gave chase and fired a shot aimed at the suspect’s legs to stop him. Salihu sustained severe gunshot injuries and was immediately rushed to the Police Clinic in Minna, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
The body has been transferred to the General Hospital, Minna, for autopsy.The Niger State Police Command stated that it has launched an internal investigation in line with standard procedures to review the circumstances surrounding the incident and the use of force.
