All soldiers attached to the Government Girls’ Comprehensive Senior Secondary School in Maga, Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, have been summoned to the Defence Headquarters in Abuja for intensive interrogation, military sources confirmed on Friday.
The move comes eleven days after gunmen stormed the school on November 17 and abducted 26 female students, an attack that occurred just hours after the military detachment stationed at the school reportedly withdrew from the premises without clear explanation.
Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, had publicly raised alarm over the sudden pull-out of the troops, stating that it created a security vacuum that the bandits exploited.
The governor’s remarks triggered immediate concern at the highest levels of the military high command.
Multiple senior security sources told PUNCH that every soldier who was on duty at the school at the time has now been recalled to Abuja, where they are being questioned by a special investigative panel to determine who authorised the withdrawal and whether there was any lapse or compromise that facilitated the abduction.
“The soldiers are currently at the Defence Headquarters answering questions. The panel wants to know the exact circumstances that led to their departure from the school shortly before the attack,” one of the sources disclosed.
As of Friday evening, the Director of Defence Media Operations had not issued an official statement on the interrogation, but the development confirms that the military has launched an internal probe into the incident.
The 26 abducted schoolgirls (aged between 14 and 18) were released unharmed on November 25 following what the federal government described as a “non-kinetic” operation coordinated by security agencies. Authorities have repeatedly stated that no ransom was paid.
Security analysts say the ongoing interrogation underscores the military’s determination to get to the root of the circumstances surrounding one of the most high-profile school abductions in the North-West this year. The investigation continues.
