Shettima Returns to Abuja After Championing Africa’s Voice at G20, AU–EU Summits

Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria’s capital after successfully representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at two high-level international engagements: the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, and the 7th African Union–European Union (AU–EU) Ministerial Summit in Luanda, Angola.

During the AU–EU Summit, Vice President Shettima delivered President Tinubu’s strongly worded statement renewing Nigeria’s demand for permanent African seats with full veto powers on a reformed United Nations Security Council.

The President described the current global governance architecture as outdated and unjust, insisting that comprehensive UN reform is “long overdue.”

President Tinubu also urged the European Union to partner with Africa in co-designing peace and security initiatives that respect and are anchored on African-led frameworks, saying this is the only sustainable path to lasting stability on the continent.

At the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, the Nigerian leader, through Vice President Shettima, made a robust case for a fairer global financial system that tackles recurring debt crises in developing nations with sincerity and equity.

In the Summit’s third plenary session on Sunday, President Tinubu called for the establishment of a global framework that guarantees communities hosting critical minerals particularly in Nigeria and across Africa benefit directly through local value addition and fair revenue sharing, rather than mere raw material extraction.

He equally threw Nigeria’s weight behind the development of universal ethical standards for Artificial Intelligence (AI), emphasizing that responsible AI governance is essential to accelerating equitable development worldwide.

The Vice President’s back-to-back appearances underscored Nigeria’s growing influence in shaping conversations on global governance, debt justice, resource beneficiation, peace architecture, and emerging technologies.

Officials at the Presidency described the missions as “hugely successful,” noting that Nigeria’s positions received widespread support from African and several Global South leaders.
