Prominent banners endorsing Governor Seyi Makinde for Nigeria's 2027 presidential election have surfaced at the Adamasingba Stadium, the site of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)'s 2025 elective national convention.
The Oyo State capital is hosting the PDP's two-day national convention, scheduled for November 15 and 16, drawing delegates and stakeholders amid a flurry of campaign materials welcoming attendees.
During a visit by reporters on Friday, multiple banners featuring Makinde's portrait were prominently displayed at the stadium's entrance.
One banner, erected by a group called Lana Fun Seyi, boldly declared: “Seyi Makinde for President,” accompanied by the governor's image.Another read: “Relax, Seyi Makinde will fix Nigeria 2027,” and was attributed to Fapetu Stephen, a PDP member from Ido Local Government Area in Oyo State.
Speculation has grown that Makinde intends to contest the presidency in 2027. In 2024, the governor stated he would announce his ambitions when ready, dismissing unsolicited rumors about his political future and asserting he needs no permission to speak for himself.
The convention site also featured posters for other PDP figures, including former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs Kabiru Turaki, who is vying for national chairman, and Taofeek Arapaja, ex-deputy national chairman, seeking the national secretary position.
These materials are part of wider displays by party support groups and state chapters in preparation for the event, which aims to elect a new National Working Committee (NWC).
The convention has faced legal hurdles, with conflicting court rulings. An Oyo High Court last week directed the PDP and acting National Chairman Umar Damagum to proceed with preparations.
Days later, an Abuja High Court barred the party from holding the event and instructed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to monitor or recognize it.
On Thursday, a faction led by Sam Anyanwu claimed the convention was postponed, an assertion swiftly rejected by the Damagum-led group.
