The House of Representatives on Monday announced a N20 million donation to the family of Hassan Makuku, the Vice Principal of Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, Kebbi State, who was killed by bandits while trying to protect students during last week’s attack.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, who led a delegation to commiserate with Governor Nasir Idris and the affected families, described Makuku as a hero who “died in active service” and sacrificed his life to shield students from the gunmen.
“Mr Makuku died trying to protect the students. This is a man who died so that others might live,” Abbas said.
“We urge Your Excellency to immortalise him by renaming Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, after this gallant Nigerian.”
The Speaker announced the N20 million support on behalf of the House, stating it would help the late vice principal’s family start a small business following the loss of their breadwinner.
He prayed for the repose of Makuku’s soul and called on Allah to grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus.
The bandits stormed the school last week, killing Makuku and abducting over two dozen students in one of the latest attacks in the northwest region.
Abbas acknowledged the efforts of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Idris to tackle insecurity but stressed that the incident was a “rude shock” and a wake-up call for innovative solutions.
“This is a big devil that has bedevilled our nation. It is a demonstration that we must continue to think outside the box to contain insecurity,” he said.
The Speaker reaffirmed the House’s commitment to collaborate with security agencies and other arms of government to restore lasting peace across the country.
As of press time, most of the abducted students remain in captivity, with security forces still conducting rescue operations.
