President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of one of Nigeria’s most prominent Islamic leaders, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, who died on Thursday at the age of 101.
In a statement issued by the State House on Thursday evening, the President described the late cleric, founder and leader of the Tijjaniyya Muslim Brotherhood in Nigeria, as “a moral compass” whose lifelong dedication to Islamic scholarship and peaceful preaching touched millions of lives.
“Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi was a teacher, a father, and a voice of moderation and reason. As both a preacher and a notable exegete of the Holy Quran, he was an advocate of peace and piety.
His death has created a huge void,” President Tinubu said. The President recalled the spiritual blessings and moral support he personally received from the Sheikh during the build-up to the 2023 presidential election, underscoring the cleric’s reputation as a unifying figure who transcended sectarian and regional divides.
President Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to the late Sheikh’s immediate family, his teeming followers across Nigeria and the wider Muslim world, as well as the government and people of Bauchi State.
He urged Nigerians, particularly members of the Tijjaniyya order, to honour the Sheikh’s legacy by upholding his teachings on peaceful coexistence, devotion to God, and kindness to all humanity.
Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, born in 1923, was widely regarded as one of the most influential Sufi leaders in West Africa, with millions of adherents in Nigeria, Niger, Ghana, and beyond.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family and the Tijjaniyya leadership in Bauchi.
