Peter Obi: 'Nigeria Has Become A Disgraced Nation Under Tinubu’s Watch'

Former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has declared that Nigeria has fully earned the description of a “now disgraced nation,” a phrase recently used by United States President-elect Donald Trump to describe the country.

In a strongly worded statement posted on his verified X handle on Wednesday, Obi said events of the past week alone make it impossible to challenge Trump’s harsh characterization.

“How can we dispute it when, within a single week, 25 people were kidnapped, and one of our generals along with other officers was killed?” Obi asked, adding that the latest terror attack in Kwara State only deepens the national shame.

The former governor accused the President Bola Tinubu-led administration of deliberately fueling crises in opposition parties at a time the country should be uniting against insecurity and economic hardship.

“Look closely at what is happening in the PDP, the Labour Party, SDP, and other political formations, crises deliberately orchestrated by a government that should be embracing everyone so we can unite in this troubling period,” he stated.

Drawing a sharp contrast with the past, Obi recalled the era of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, who, during an internal party crisis, directed then-INEC Chairman Professor Maurice Iwu to ensure the stability of every political party, not just the ruling party.

“What we witness today is the opposite,” Obi lamented. “The current government seems more intent on weakening parties than strengthening our democracy seeking to fragment the PDP, Labour Party, SDP, and others.”

He insisted that in mature democracies, opposition parties are respected, elections reflect the genuine will of the people, and governance is inclusive, “carrying everyone along for peace and prosperity".
