Residents of Ibadan and several local government areas in Oyo State have carried out the traditional Yoruba ritual known as “Akara Ìkú” or “Akara Ẹmí” against Governor Seyi Makinde, giving him seven days to address their grievances or face the consequences of the invocation.
The ritual, performed at major junctions including Oje, Molete, and Challenge, involved frying bean cakes (akara) and sharing them publicly while pronouncing solemn curses and warnings on the governor.
Protesters accused Makinde of gross neglect of the people, imposition of unpopular monarchs, non-payment of salaries and gratuities, and total abandonment of local government administration.
Similar rituals were reportedly conducted across Oke-Ogun, Ibarapa, and Ogbomoso zones, signaling widespread anger against the governor’s administration.
Palace elders have cautioned that Akara Ìkú is a rare and extremely potent traditional invocation that should not be taken lightly. As of press time, the Oyo State Government has not responded to the development.
