The Rector of Yaba College of Technology, YABATECH, Dr Ibraheem Abdul, has said the process of changing the college to a university is still on course, as the National Assembly and the Presidency are tidying up the remaining issues involved in the process.
Abdul stated this on Friday while briefing the press on the activities lined up for the 37th convocation ceremony of the institution.
The rector, who explained that the management of the college had gone to the National Assembly to defend the proposal, gave the assurance that the process would culminate in the upgrade of the institution very soon.
Recall that the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, early this year, while on an official visit to the college, announced the readiness of the Federal Government to upgrade it to a university.
“We have done what is expected of us at this end; we went to the National Assembly to defend the proposal, and we have all that it takes to become a university. At YABATECH, there are over 200 doctorate degree holders among our staff members, and the facilities are also there for us to use. We are praying and fasting that it becomes a reality soon,” he said.
Giving a breakdown of the number of graduates that would take part in this year’s convocation, the Rector said a total of 8,654 would bag diplomas in various courses at the National Diploma and Higher National Diploma levels.
Among them, 291 have distinction, with the Best Graduating Student being Ani Faith Ada of the Department of Office Technology Management with a CGPA of 3.90 out of a possible 4.0.
Also, the Senate Majority Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, is to deliver the convocation lecture titled “Entrepreneurship Development in the Digital Age: Leveraging Technology for Job Creation and Economic Growth”. The occasion will be chaired by Professor Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms.
“Additionally, during this 37th Convocation Ceremony, we are honoured to bestow the prestigious Fellowship Award of Yaba College of Technology on three eminent Nigerians who have made outstanding contributions to the nation’s digital and economic landscape.
