Nigeria Not a Religious Freedom Violator, FG Insists

The Federal Government has firmly rejected international claims that Nigeria violates religious freedom, describing such portrayals as inaccurate, harmful, and designed to undermine national unity.

Speaking at the 25th anniversary celebration of ActionAid Nigeria on Thursday, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, cautioned against what he called a “growing and disturbing mischaracterisation” of the country.“It is not accurate, it is not helpful, and indeed, it is very hurtful to brand Nigeria as a violator of religious freedom,” Idris said.

“These narratives are helping those who do not wish Nigeria well to push us toward a destination where Muslims and Christians do not live in harmony.”

The minister argued that the real threat to Nigeria comes from terrorists, bandits, and criminal elements who seek to exploit religious and ethnic differences to weaken the nation.

While commending ActionAid Nigeria for 25 years of impactful work in women’s empowerment, education, healthcare, governance reform, and humanitarian response, Idris urged civil society organisations to actively counter misleading narratives and promote national cohesion.

During the event, the minister launched the ActionAid Nigeria 25 Years Legacy Book and unveiled the architectural prototype of the organisation’s proposed new headquarters, hailing both as symbols of the NGO’s long-term commitment to the country.
