The Federal Government has confirmed that the first 47-kilometre section of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway will be opened to traffic between December 12 and 17, 2025.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed this on Sunday during an on-site inspection of the ongoing construction, expressing confidence that both the government and the contractor, Hitech Construction Company, are fully committed to meeting the target.
“This job must be completed. We are here on the president’s directive, working for the people, to ensure that the carriageway is opened for public use by December,” Umahi said.
“We have agreed with the contractor… Everything will be done to provide unfettered access from channel 0 to channel 47, up to channel 55; that is our intention.
We have set aside the 12th to the 17th of next month to publicly open it for public use, without stopping the work,” he added.
The minister further revealed that Section 1 and half of Section 2 of the 750-kilometre highway, which will link nine coastal states, are slated for full commissioning (excluding bridges) by April 2026.
In a related development, Umahi addressed a lingering controversy involving Okengwu Stella Winhomes, stating that a recent Federal High Court ruling has dismissed the company’s suit challenging the highway’s alignment for lacking merit and locus standi.
He explained that court documents filed by Mrs Stella Okengwu herself showed that Winhomes had already sold the disputed land to third parties, contradicting her public claims of a $250 million residential estate being destroyed.
“The court has exposed her claims as mendacious and unfounded,” Umahi said, accusing her of spreading falsehoods to undermine the project and scare investors.
He urged Nigerians to disregard the allegations, describing Okengwu as “a troublemaker and false alarmist.”
The December opening of the first section marks a major milestone in the long-awaited Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway project, which is expected to transform transportation, trade, and economic activities along Nigeria’s coastline.
