Kwankwaso Suffers Major Defeat as Court Reaffirms Agbo Major’s Leadership of NNPP

The Federal Capital Territory High Court has delivered another crushing blow to Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, issuing fresh restraining orders that force the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise only Dr Agbo Gilbert Major as the authentic National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

In two ex-parte rulings on 25 and 27 November 2025, Justice Bello Kawu of FCT High Court 14, Apo:Barred INEC from dealing with or recognising the rival faction linked to Kwankwaso

Prohibited INEC from attending or monitoring any congress or convention organised by the faction.

Granted leave for judicial review by mandamus, with the leave operating as an automatic stay of any contrary action by INEC.

The court restrained 16 members of the rival group, including Dr Ajuji Ahmed, Abba Kawu Ali, Ladipo Johnson, and others, and ordered substituted service on them through the NNPP National Secretariat.

Following the orders, the Agbo Major-led NNPP wrote to the new INEC Chairman, Prof Joash Amupitan SAN, reminding the commission of multiple existing judgments (including Abia and FCT High Court rulings) that already validated Major’s April 2024 convention) and warning that recognising the Kwankwaso-backed faction would amount to contempt of court.

The case has been adjourned to 10 December 2025 for hearing of the substantive suit. The latest ruling further weakens Kwankwaso’s grip on the NNPP ahead of the 2027 elections.
