The high-stakes terrorism trial of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu descended into pandemonium today at the Federal High Court in Abuja, as a heated exchange between the defendant and Justice James Omotosho culminated in Kanu's forcible removal from the courtroom.
In a dramatic turn during the ongoing judgment proceedings, Kanu representing himself after parting ways with his legal team, vehemently insisted on delivering his final written address, despite repeated judicial warnings and procedural deadlines.
The 58-year-old separatist leader, who has been in custody since his controversial 2021 rendition from Kenya, argued that the court must allow him to present his defense, reiterating claims of fabricated evidence and jurisdictional flaws in the eight-count terrorism indictment.
Eyewitnesses described a tense atmosphere in the packed courtroom, where after prolonged back-and-forth arguments, Justice Omotosho grew visibly frustrated.
"This court has afforded you ample opportunity," the judge reportedly stated, before directing armed security personnel to escort Kanu out of the session.
The order sparked immediate uproar, with Kanu's supporters many of whom had gathered outside the court voicing chants of protest, while DSS operatives swiftly intervened to maintain order.
The incident marks yet another explosive chapter in a trial that has spanned nearly a decade, captivating Nigeria's southeast and igniting national debates on secessionism, human rights, and judicial independence.
Kanu, a British-Nigerian broadcaster whose Radio Biafra broadcasts have rallied pro-independence fervor, faces charges including treasonable felony and incitement to violence, allegations he has consistently dismissed as politically motivated persecution.
