It's Time for Nigeria to Allow us to Carry Arms'-Sen. Francis Adenigba

Senator Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi (PDP, Osun East) stunned the Nigerian Senate on Thursday when he openly advocated for the legalisation of firearm ownership and concealed carry by civilians, declaring on the floor of the Red Chamber: “It’s time for Nigeria to allow us to carry arms.”

Speaking during a heated debate on the worsening security situation across the country, the retired Customs Comptroller argued that the military and police are overstretched and unable to protect citizens from kidnappers, bandits, and terrorists.

“Almost 120 countries have already legalised carrying arms by sane and respectable people,” Senator Fadahunsi said. “If not, these birds you see them… because there are not too many. It is time for the negotiators to end, because the negotiators are even eating deep into what is happening today.”

The senator’s remarks, captured live by NTA and Senate TV, quickly went viral on social media, sparking sharp reactions from Nigerians.

Many hailed the proposal as a pragmatic response to rampant insecurity, while others warned that arming civilians could worsen violent crime and lead to chaos.

This is not Senator Fadahunsi’s first push on the issue. In 2023, he sponsored a bill to amend the Firearms Act to permit licensed citizens to own guns for self-defence, though it stalled after first reading.
