Several private and public primary and secondary schools located along the boundaries of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have been shut down indefinitely over escalating security threats across the country, Daily Trust can authoritatively report.
The closures are in compliance with a directive issued by the Niger State Government ordering all schools in the state to remain closed until further notice, following the recent abduction of students from St. Mary’s School in Papiri, Niger State.
On Monday, our correspondent visited communities such as Madalla, Zuma Rock Area, Dakwa, and Sabon Wuse, all in Tafa Local Government Area of Niger State and observed that school gates were firmly locked and premises deserted.
Similar scenes were recorded in Garam and other villages around Bwari Area Council of the FCT, which share boundaries with Kaduna and Niger states.
A teacher at one of the affected private schools confirmed to Daily Trust that proprietors in the Abuja-Niger border communities held an emergency meeting and unanimously agreed to comply with the Niger State directive.
“Though we are not in the most affected areas, we have to be proactive and obey the authorities. We have asked our pupils to stay at home for now until the situation improves,” the teacher said.
He added that the closure came just as schools were preparing for examinations, noting that academic activities would resume immediately once clearance is given.
On Sunday night, one of the schools sent the following notice to parents:
“Dear Parents and Guardians,
Following the directive from the Niger State Government, we regret to inform you that our school will be closed with immediate effect from 24th November, 2025 UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.This decision was made after careful consideration and in response to the current security situation in the state. We prioritize the safety and well-being of our students, and this closure is necessary to ensure their protection. We will communicate any updates or resumption dates as soon as possible.”
The FCT shares extensive borders with neighbouring states 179 km with Niger, 45 km with Kaduna, 156 km with Nasarawa, and 17 km with Kogi making several of its satellite communities particularly vulnerable to spillover insecurity.
