'If he can’t build PDP, he can’t fix Nigeria’ — Oshiomhole Mocks Atiku’s Defection to ADC

Former APC National Chairman and Edo North Senator, Adams Oshiomhole, has dismissed Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ambition, saying the former Vice-President lacks the competence to govern Nigeria because he repeatedly failed to provide leadership or stabilise the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Oshiomhole made the remarks on Monday night during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, hours after Atiku officially defected from the PDP to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) a party now adopted by a coalition of opposition figures eyeing the 2027 presidential race.

“If Atiku, as former Vice-President and the most powerful figure in PDP for years, could not fix PDP, could not reconstruct it, and could not use his enormous influence to give it direction, how can he lay claim to fixing Nigeria?” Oshiomhole asked.

The senator reminded viewers that Atiku was once a founding member of the APC but left in 2014 after failing to secure the party’s presidential ticket, returned to the PDP, contested and lost the ticket twice, and has now moved to a third party.

"He was in APC, he left because he lost the ticket. He went back to PDP because he loves PDP only when it serves his presidential ambition. He couldn’t build PDP. So if Atiku can’t build the party that made him Vice-President, he certainly can’t fix Nigeria,” Oshiomhole said.

Atiku had earlier confirmed his defection on X with a photo of his new ADC membership card and the caption: “It’s official.”The former Vice-President resigned from the PDP in July 2025 after months of bitter internal crises that further weakened the main opposition party.
