Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has announced a N30 billion counterpart funding pledge for the Kaduna Bus Rapid Transit (KBRT) system, in partnership with the Agence Française de Dévelopement (AFD).
Speaking at the national transport conference, Sani described the KBRT as northern Nigeria's pioneering project and the country's second after Lagos, featuring a dedicated 24km corridor from Rigachikun to Sabon Tasha with 120 compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered articulated buses.
The initiative is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 38 percent and save commuters N1.8 billion in annual fuel costs.
It will create 3,200 direct jobs—including drivers, station agents, and maintenance engineers—plus 11,000 indirect roles in ICT, security, cleaning, and small-scale trade.
Sani also updated progress on the Kaduna light rail: Phase 1 will restore the historic rail gauge along the Rigachikun-Sabon Tasha route, while Phase 2 will extend approximately 50km from Millennium City to link with the existing Abuja-Kaduna line at Rigasa.
To ease the burden of fuel subsidy removal, the state launched the Kaduna Subsidized Transport Scheme (KSTS).
President Bola Tinubu commissioned 100 new CNG/hybrid buses in June, offering free rides to students, workers, and retirees—a policy that has saved commuters over N500 million since July 7, 2025.
Over 200 bus stops are under construction in the first phase to boost safety and efficiency, with second and third phases to follow for full statewide coverage.
