Gov Yusuf, Ganduje Meet After Two Years at Kano Airport

In a brief but cordial encounter, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and his predecessor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, crossed paths for the first time in over two years on Tuesday at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport.

Ganduje, now Chairman of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Board, was in Kano to inspect ongoing and abandoned projects at the airport.

The meeting occurred in the VIP lounge shortly after the inspection. The two political heavyweights, whose relationship has been strained since the fiercely contested 2023 governorship election, exchanged pleasantries in Hausa for about four minutes before boarding separate flights to Abuja.

Ganduje, who served two terms as governor from 2015 to 2023, left Kano on the eve of Yusuf’s inauguration in May 2023. He did not personally hand over power, delegating the task to the then Secretary to the State Government, Usman Alhaji.

Speaking to journalists earlier, Ganduje explained the purpose of his visit: “We are here to see things for ourselves, the old and the new projects so that we can chart a new course to revitalise this airport and restore its place among the best in the region.

”FAAN Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, accompanied Ganduje and highlighted the agency’s renewed focus on staff welfare.

“Since assuming office, we have improved working conditions and will continue to prioritise employee well-being as a foundation for effective service delivery and long-term institutional growth,” she said.

The encounter, though brief, marks a rare moment of public interaction between the two leaders amid ongoing political differences in the state.
