FIFA rankings: Eagles climb three spots globally despite World Cup miss

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have climbed three spots from 41st to 38th in the world based on FIFA’s latest rankings.

According to the list released on Wednesday by the world football governing body, the three-time African champions stayed in fifth position on the continent.

The team’s improved ranking comes despite missing out on the 2026 World Cup. Nigeria lost on penalties to DR Congo in the final of the African playoffs over the weekend.

The Eagles had defeated Gabon 4-1 after extra time in the semi-final of the playoffs.

In FIFA’s latest log, Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, and Algeria retained their positions as the top four African teams in that order, with Tunisia, Cote d’Ivoire and Mali in sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively.

DR Congo and Cameroon complete the African top ten teams.

Meanwhile, Spain remained number one in the world, while Argentina, France and England maintained their spots in second, third and fourth, respectively. Brazil overtook Portugal as the fifth-best team in the world.

The next FIFA world ranking will be released in early 2026.
