The Federal Government has announced plans to introduce subsidies for vulnerable consumers unable to bear the full cost of electricity under the upcoming cost-reflective tariff regime.
Abdu Bello Mohammed, Managing Director of the Nigerian Independent System Operator, disclosed this during a roundtable discussion with power sector correspondents in Abuja.
Themed "Cost-Reflective Tariff Versus Energy Poverty: Finding a Pricing Balance in Nigeria's Power Sector," the engagement saw stakeholders concur that while cost-reflective tariffs are essential for sector growth, they must be paired with enhanced electricity availability and quality.
Participants also called for tackling technical and commercial losses, decentralizing the grid to minimize transmission inefficiencies, and boosting investments in distribution infrastructure, including transformers and metering systems.
