FG Shuts Down 47 Federal Unity Colleges Nationwide

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the immediate closure of forty-seven (47) Federal Unity Colleges across the country, citing the need for “comprehensive restructuring, rationalisation of resources, and improved efficiency in the delivery of secondary education.”

The affected schools, spread across the six geo-political zones but predominantly in the northern states, have been directed to cease academic and boarding activities with immediate effect.

Students are to be transferred to nearby Federal Unity Colleges that will remain operational, while staff redeployment processes have commenced.

In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, the government described the decision as “painful but necessary” to address years of under-enrolment, dilapidated infrastructure, high running costs, and security challenges in some of the affected schools.

Parents and education stakeholders in the affected communities have expressed shock and disappointment, with many calling on the government to reconsider the decision or provide clearer timelines and support for the transition of students.

The Ministry has set up a special committee to oversee the transfer of students before the commencement of the second term in January 2026 and assured that no child will be left behind in the restructuring exercise.
