FG Inaugurates Inter-Ministerial Committee to Enforce Single-Use Plastics Ban

The Federal Government on Wednesday inaugurated the Inter-Ministerial Committee on the Ban of Single-Use Plastics (SUPs), taking a decisive step toward combating plastic pollution and advancing environmental sustainability in Nigeria.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, represented by Permanent Secretary (General Services Office), Mohammed Sanusi Danjuma, described the ban as a critical move to curb the environmental and health hazards posed by single-use plastics.

“Plastic pollution remains a grave threat to public health, biodiversity, and marine ecosystems. This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s obligations under international environmental agreements and reinforces our commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals,” Danjuma stated.

The multi-stakeholder committee, drawn from key Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), as well as civil society and industry representatives, is tasked with developing a coordinated national framework to phase out single-use plastics.

Its core mandate includes:Conducting a comprehensive assessment of single-use plastics in circulation;

Evaluating the socio-economic and environmental impacts of the ban;

Promoting sustainable alternatives and best practices across the plastic value chain.

The launch signals Nigeria’s growing leadership in regional efforts to tackle plastic waste, with experts hailing the move as a bold step toward a cleaner, greener future.
