Operatives of the FCT Police Command in the early hours of Thursday successfully thwarted a large-scale kidnapping attempt in Guto village, Bwari Area Council, but lost one gallant officer in the fierce gun battle that ensued.
At about 01:10 a.m., the Command received a distress call that approximately 30 heavily armed hoodlums had stormed the community with the intention of abducting a resident and members of his family.
The Bwari Divisional Surveillance Team, reinforced by the Inspector-General of Police Special Intervention Squad (SIS), responded immediately.
On sighting the police team, the attackers opened fire, triggering an intense exchange of gunfire.
The superior firepower of the police team overwhelmed the bandits, neutralising two of them on the spot while the rest fled into nearby bushes and hills, abandoning their mission.
Tragically, one police officer sustained fatal gunshot wounds during the encounter. He was rushed to Bwari General Hospital where doctors confirmed he had paid the supreme price in defence of the citizens.
Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Miller G. Dantawaye psc., has condoled with the family of the fallen hero and ordered massive deployment of additional personnel to Guto and surrounding communities to forestall further attacks.
CP Dantawaye assured residents that normalcy has been restored and directed an immediate full-scale investigation to track down and bring the fleeing assailants to justice.
He commended the bravery of the officers and reaffirmed the Command’s resolve to rid the Federal Capital Territory of all criminal elements.
