ECOWAS Condemns Terror Surge in West Africa, Denies Claims of Targeted Genocide

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has called on the United Nations and global partners to intensify support for member states facing a sharp rise in terrorist attacks, particularly in Nigeria and across the Sahel and Lake Chad regions.

In a communiqué, ECOWAS stressed that armed extremist groups indiscriminately target civilians irrespective of religion, gender, ethnicity, or age, citing years of independent reports that confirm the non-discriminatory nature of such violence.

The regional bloc categorically rejected what it described as “false and dangerous claims” alleging that terrorist organizations are targeting specific religious communities or perpetrating genocide against any single faith group.

ECOWAS warned that such narratives threaten to inflame tensions, erode social cohesion, and hinder collective efforts to combat terrorism.

“ECOWAS calls on the international community to stand firmly with countries in the region in their fight against terrorism that spares no community,” the statement urged.

The appeal follows a wave of intensified attacks by various extremist factions operating in West Africa’s volatile security landscape.
