The Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian military directly intervened to secure the release of 38 worshippers kidnapped in Eruku, Kwara State, by making contact with the bandits and compelling them to free the victims, the Presidency disclosed on Monday.
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, revealed that security agencies used real-time tracking systems to monitor the criminals and then reached out to the kidnappers, issuing a firm demand for the immediate and unconditional release of the captives.
“The bandits complied because they were fully aware of the consequences of defying government directives,” Onanuga said during an interview on Aries TV..
He emphasised that no ransom was paid, and the successful rescue was achieved through coordinated intelligence and psychological pressure on the criminals rather than a firefight.
The 38 worshippers, mostly members of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) in Eruku, were abducted on November 15, 2025, while travelling in a church bus to a programme in nearby Jebba.
Their release on Sunday night ended a ten-day ordeal that had sparked widespread anxiety in Kwara State and beyond.
The Presidency commended the DSS, military, and other security agencies for the swift and professional operation, describing it as proof that Nigeria’s security architecture is increasingly capable of locating and neutralising criminal elements without yielding to ransom demands.
No arrests have been announced, but security sources say the operation continues to dismantle the kidnapping syndicate responsible for the attack.
