A convicted Nigerian kidnapper serving 21 years has triggered a massive police dragnet after casually walking out of a low-security UK prison exposing cracks in Labour’s controversial early-transfer scheme.
Ola Abimbola, 36, convicted of conspiracy to kidnap, grievous bodily harm, blackmail, and false imprisonment, vanished from HMP Ford in Sussex around 8 a.m. on October 10—just weeks after being moved to the Category D “open” facility.
Under new rules to combat prison overcrowding, Abimbola qualified for the lax regime six years ahead of schedule.
Open prisons, with minimal barriers, are designed for low-risk inmates nearing release; critics now brand the policy reckless.Sussex Police warn the public: Do not approach. Dial 999 with any sightings. Tracking efforts remain fruitless.
The breakout piles pressure on Justice Secretary David Lammy, already reeling from the wrongful release of two foreign sex offenders and a British fraudster.
Tories slam the system as “chaotic” and “dangerous.”Mark Drury of the Prison Governors’ Association warned: “Prisoners now in open conditions wouldn’t have been eligible two or three years ago—this surge in escapes proves the risk.”
The Ministry of Justice insists every transfer undergoes “strict risk assessments” and rule-breakers are “swiftly returned to closed prisons.”
