Armed bandits on Wednesday abducted 24 people, including a pregnant woman, from a rice farm in Palaita community, Erena ward, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.
The attack occurred around 2 p.m. while farmers were harvesting their crops. According to residents, the gunmen surrounded the workers and marched them into the forest before troops from a nearby military base, located about five kilometres away, could intervene.
In a separate incident earlier the same day in Kakuru community, also in Erena ward, another band of gunmen stormed the village around 8 a.m. while most residents were on their farms.
Finding only a blind man at home, the attackers seized his mobile phone, beat him severely, and chopped off his right hand with a machete.
He is currently receiving treatment at a local clinic in nearby Kuduru community.The attacks come barely 72 hours after gunmen raided St. Mary’s Private Secondary School in Papiri, Agwara LGA, abducting over 300 students and staff.
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Niger State confirmed that 50 of the abducted students have since regained freedom and quietly reunited with their families.Security sources say operations are ongoing to rescue the latest victims and restore calm in the affected communities.
