ASUU UNIJOS Threatens Strike Resumption Over Unmet Demands by Nov 21 Deadline

The University of Jos (UNIJOS) branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned that it will resume its suspended strike if the federal government does not address outstanding demands by November 21, 2025.

The union issued a four-week ultimatum on October 22, 2025, to resolve its grievances. In a statement released on Wednesday, ASUU UNIJOS Chairperson Jurbe Joseph Molwus highlighted that two weeks have elapsed with little progress.

Molwus announced that ASUU's national executive council (NEC) will convene on November 8 and 9, expecting concrete actions on key issues.

These include payment of 3.5 months of withheld salaries, arrears from the 25%/35% wage award, promotion arrears, and unpaid salaries for certain members.

"What we need is credit alerts and not misleading releases," Molwus said, dismissing recent statements from the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa.

The branch raised alarms over a reported N50 billion revitalisation fund allegedly released weeks ago, which has not reached the universities.

Molwus directly refuted Alausa's claim that N2.3 billion had been disbursed to settle salary and promotion arrears in federal universities.

"As we speak right now, the university workers have yet to receive any such alerts," he stated.ASUU described the N2.3 billion as "grossly inadequate and almost insulting," noting it could barely cover three major Nigerian universities.

The union demanded the minister specify what portion of the total arrears this amount addresses.

The statement accused Alausa of making contradictory remarks on ASUU's demands and prior agreements.

Urging students, parents, and the public to mount pressure on the government, ASUU UNIJOS called for immediate action before the November 21 deadline expires.
