The African Union Commission (AUC) on Thursday delivered a robust rebuke to United States allegations of Nigerian complicity in the targeted persecution of Christians and veiled threats of military action, declaring full-throated support for Nigeria’s sovereignty, religious freedoms, and rule of law.
In a sharply worded statement from its Addis Ababa headquarters, the pan-African body hailed Nigeria as “a longstanding and valued member state that plays a critical role in regional stability, counter-terrorism, peacekeeping, and continental integration,” while insisting that any external engagement must strictly honor Abuja’s territorial integrity and constitutional framework.
The Commission dismissed Washington’s narrative as an oversimplification of Nigeria’s security landscape, cautioning that “conflating complex security challenges with a single religious narrative risks undermining effective solutions and destabilising communities.”
“Nigeria faces multifaceted threats, including violent extremism, banditry, communal clashes, and resource-based conflicts that affect citizens of all faiths,” the AUC emphasized, advocating for bolstered multilateral cooperation through intelligence-sharing, capacity-building, and diplomatic channels instead of unilateral saber-rattling.
Reiterating Nigeria’s constitutional safeguards for religious freedom, the AU categorically rejected claims of state-sponsored persecution and pledged sustained technical and political backing via its Peace and Security Council architecture.
The statement concluded with a stern reminder to the U.S. and other foreign actors: threats of military intervention contravene the AU’s bedrock principles of non-interference and sovereign equality, potentially jeopardizing broader continental stability.
“The African Union remains committed to supporting all member states in promoting peace, security, human rights, and development while upholding the sacred principles of sovereignty and non-interference,” it declared.
