Abducted Anglican Priest, Ven. Edwin Achi, D!es in Bandits’ Captivity

The Venerable Edwin Achi, Priest-in-Charge of Ebenezer Anglican Church, Ungwan Maijero, Kaduna, has died while in the hands of the bandits who abducted him one month ago.

The tragic news was confirmed on Wednesday night by Rev. Joseph John Hayab, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) for the 19 Northern States and FCT.“This is true but sad to the church and his family,” Rev. Hayab told Daily Trust.

Ven. Achi was kidnapped alongside his wife and daughter on 28 October 2025 when armed bandits stormed their residence in Nissi Village, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The family had only recently relocated to the community. The abductors initially demanded N600 million ransom.

The Diocese of Kaduna, Anglican Communion, officially announced the cleric’s death in a statement on Wednesday night, describing it as “a painful loss.”

“With heavy hearts and deep sorrow, we announce the passing unto glory of The Venerable Edwin Achi… who was kidnapped alongside his wife on 28th October 2025,” the statement read.

The church added that it continues to pray fervently for the safe release of Mrs. Achi and their daughter, who remain in captivity. The late cleric was from Umuaja in Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State.

The incident comes barely 24 hours after President Bola Tinubu declared a national state of emergency on insecurity and ordered massive recruitment into the police and army, as well as the immediate deployment of trained forest guards by the Department of State Services (DSS) to flush bandits out of their hideouts.

Speaking during a nationwide broadcast on Wednesday, the President warned criminals that “there will be no more hiding places for agents of evil” and directed the National Assembly to expedite action on legislation that would allow willing states to establish state police.

The death of Ven. Achi has once again highlighted the worsening security crisis in Kaduna and other parts of northern Nigeria, where abductions for ransom have become routine.
