5.5 Million Nigerian Households Now Receiving Cash Transfers – FG

The Federal Government has announced that at least 5.5 million vulnerable households across Nigeria are currently benefiting directly from various cash transfer programmes.

The disclosure was made by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, during the inauguration of the National Steering Committee for the Act Naija project held in Abuja on Tuesday.

Represented by his aide, Mrs Abimbola Fasanu, the minister stated that the ministry has continued to expand and strengthen social protection mechanisms to tackle poverty, vulnerability, and humanitarian challenges nationwide.

He highlighted key initiatives such as the Conditional Cash Transfer, Grants for Vulnerable Groups, N-POWER, Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP), and the Home Grown School Feeding Programme.

“Through these interventions, over 19.78 million households have been captured in the National Social Register,” Dr Doro said, adding that “5.5 million households are currently receiving regular cash transfers, while micro-credit schemes are supporting the livelihoods of more than 5 million Nigerians, with strong participation from women and youth in all 774 local government areas.”

The minister revealed that the National Social Protection Policy is being reviewed and updated in collaboration with stakeholders to reflect current socio-economic realities and align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

While inaugurating the Act Naija Project’s National Steering Committee, Dr Doro described the initiative as a vital platform for promoting transparency, accountability, and measurable impact in social protection delivery.

He charged members of the committee to provide strategic leadership and ensure effective coordination among government agencies, development partners, and civil society organisations.

In his remarks, Rev. David Ugolor, Executive Director of the Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), hailed the inauguration as a landmark step toward building a more inclusive and resilient social protection system that leaves no Nigerian behind.
