Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan and Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike are set to be celebrated as Heroes of Democracy at the 2025 Democracy Heroes Award Africa, recognizing their significant contributions to democratic governance.
The announcement, made on September 30, 2025, also named Senate Majority Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, Senator Sani Musa, and Botswana President Duma Gideon Boko among the honorees.
The awards, aimed at spotlighting leaders who have advanced democracy across the continent, will highlight Jonathan’s historic 2015 election concession, which marked a milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey by enabling a peaceful transition to an opposition government.
Wike, a former Rivers State governor, is being recognized for his transformative leadership and current role in overseeing development in the nation’s capital.
Organizers of the event emphasized the importance of honoring individuals who have strengthened democratic institutions and inspired progress in Africa.
